Katherine to Crab Claw and Back

Well goodness me how good it is to be back on line. We have had no reception for nearly 2 weeks now. We went from Katherine to Crab Claw Island which is a fishing spot about 150klms south west of Darwin. We were there for 12 days and werent sorry to leave, the sand flies and mozzies nearly carried us away but we were determined to get ourselves a barra. Sad to say we still havent got the barra but did get 2 big muddies, a blue salmon, 2 moon fish and NEARLY had ourselves a 5 foot hammerhead shark. Talk about stress, the moment Tony gets a big bite, "pull the 3 lines in, pull the anchor up, get the landing net, get the gaffe" I tell you, you sure need a few Chardies after a day out on the water. However the boat has had a good test and we are happy with how it went, getting it off and on the ute is fairly easy. The weather was hot, hot, hot, and the nights awful, but as the powered sites were $30 a night we felt that $12 unpowered was more our budget.
Not really much more to tell about Crab Claw except that I wouldnt recommend it. We rang Rhonda who used to work in our Restaurant, she and hubbie Andrew now live in Darwin. We had a quick chat and said we would get in touch when we arrived in Darwin. Surprise, surprise next morning at 9am who should arrive but Rhonda with supplies, she knew that we would be nearly out of fresh stuff, there being no shops of any kind at Crab Claw. We then had lettuce, tomato, avocado, cucumber, camembert, breadrolls, and a roast chicken, thank you Rhonda!!!!!!!
We left Crab Claw after packing up wet gear it having rained quite heavy the night before. We took the dirt road down to Litchfield National Park, rough but we took it easy. I must say we have been impressed with all roads so far this trip. Arrived at Wangi Falls and took some nice Pics, then we thought we should find ourselves somewhere to stay for the night. A nice van park, Wangi Falls, great to camp on grass again. Quite a warm night but nothing like we had for the last 10 days. Took a short drive to Tolmer Falls and the Lost City, so awseome the rocky outcrops and the colours. Hayden if you look at the rocks in the front garden and find the pink ones with black or grey running through it that is what the whole area is like. I still havent been able to fix the downloading of Pictures but when we get to Darwin will do so. I have so many Pictures to download, I can help myself when I see so much. Mother nature certainly has provided so much beauty for us all to enjoy. At the beginning of the 2 klm walk is a beautiful clear pool of water and Tony couldnt help himself, down to the jocks and in he goes, said his skin felt so clean afterwards. There was a forest of white cycads, never seen anything like it before. We have met some lovely people on the trip, Anka from Holland has been travelling around Australia for nearly 12 months, started from Cairns and gone clockwise, then met a nice guy from Stuggart who had been here for 7 weeks had done mostly the top end starting from Cairns. His favourite place was Palm Valley west of the Alice.
This morning we walked to the Florence Falls, the pathways have been done in the pink stone, looks beautiful, the whole area has been flood during the wet season, and some of the roads are still closed. We walked down to the plunge pool and once again Tony took the plunge. From there we drove to the magnetic termite mounds, amazing little creatures, how they know which direction to build their homes according to the warmth of the sun .
We have backtracked a little bit today have come back down the Stuart highway to Adelaide River township, had a look at the War Memorial which is dedicated to those who lost their lives in the bombing raids in Darwin during the 2nd World War.It is a moving testament to the bravery of the men and women. We are staying at the Showgrounds which is a popular thing these days, we have power, laundry, pool. Tomorrow we are off to Darwin for a couple of weeks before going to do the sights of kakadu.
Thanks to all of you who have been sending emails, we love to hear from you so keep sending them.
